Introducing Scout Volunteering

At the 1st Hoveton and Wroxham Sea Scouts we are proud to say that we are run entirely by volunteers. This has always been the case for us, and for Scouting in general. Scouting has grown to be the largest youth organisation in the world (with over 55 million members) entirely due to the efforts of our volunteers.

Scout volunteers have done something more than just grow the movement, we have enriched the lives of countless young people and, in doing so, we have changed the world for the better. When Scouting began, the Scout Values were so far ahead of their time that many people in high places actually considered the Scouts to be a subversive organisation and that it was madness to tell young people that they are all equal and should all have the same chances in life. How times have changed. Now Scouting Values are mainstream and we must never forget the part Scouting has played in making this so.

Scouting has truly changed the world for the better but there is still much to be done and you can be part of this too if you become a Scout volunteer.

We don't spend our days in classrooms. Scouts learn by taking part in fun activities.

Adults can join in. You could be part of this too.

The Why, How and What of Scouting Values
climbing
Why:  We believe that Scouting truly has the power to change the World for the better and that it already has done so. The future belongs to young people and if they have the skills, values and self confidence that we provide, then nothing is impossible.

How:   The Scout Method
Scouts takes place when young people, in partnership with adult volunteers, work together based on the values of Scouts to:
  • enjoy what they are doing and have fun;
  • take part in activities indoors and outdoors;
  • learn by doing;
  • share in spiritual reflection;
  • take responsibility and make choices;
  • undertake new and challenging activities;
  • make and live by their Promise.
What:  Scouting provides a set of values to live your life by. We don’t just do this, we have promised to do this.
As Scouts, we’re guided by our values, which are:
  • Integrity: We act with integrity. We’re honest, trustworthy and loyal.
  • Respect: We’ve self-respect and respect for others.
  • Care: We support others and take care of the world in which we live.
  • Belief: We explore our faiths, beliefs and attitudes.
  • Cooperation: We make a positive difference. We co-operate with others and make friends.

Who can be a Scouting Volunteer

Anyone who shares our values can be a Scouting Volunteer. It simply is one of the most rewarding leisure activities you can do.

Got more Questions? Here are a few answers

Is there training to do?
Yes, there is training. The actual training you need depends on what role you have volunteered for and on what experience you already have. Safety and Safeguarding training is compulsory as you might expect. Most training is done on-line.
Will I need a DBS check?
Yes, you will need one. We will arrange this for you. We have to make sure that the young people are safe.
I have a criminal record will I fail the DBS?
We don't control this and we don't see your records. We just get a yes or no. We all make mistakes in our past lives and minor offences should not be a problem.
I can't come every week is this a problem?
No, it is not a problem. Lots of us can't do this. Only volunteer for as much as you are able to do. We welcome volunteers who can give any amount of time.
Those activities look like fun to me. Can I join in?
Yes of course you can. Get in there and get your hands dirty.
What do skills instructors do?
Skills instructors have special training in specific activities. If you don't have the skills, we will arrange for you to go on a course.
Do I wear a uniform?
Some roles are uniformed (Section Volunteers for example). Others are not. If you need a uniform, we will pay for it.

Still got questions? Our contact details are above. Just ask us. We are friendly and helpful.
