What are Skills Instructors?
Skills Instructors are Volunteers who specialise in teaching young people a specific skill or skills. These skills are often of a more adventurous type although they don't have to be and many require specific additional training or qualifications. Frequently they are specialist skills or interests that the average person does not have. Examples might be:

Climbing
Archery
Shooting
Sailing
Kayak/Canoe
Tomahawk Throwing
Crate Stacking
Swimming
Cycling
Caving
Mountaineering
Hill Walking
and practically anything else you
can think of that might be fun and instructive.

Who can be a Skills Instructor and how are they appointed?
Crate
                        Stacking
       Crate Stacking

Any responsible person over the age of 18 who has suitable skills or who is willing to acquire those skills can be a Skills Instructor. The vast majority of adults can do this role.

Volunteers are appointed as Skills Instructors after they have completed the necessary training and have demonstrated that they can teach the skills to young people and supervise them in a safe manner.

What do Skills Instructors do?

Skills Instructors work with young people at Scout Events to allow them to take part in activities. Skills Instructors can attend other Scouting events and take part in other Scouting activities.

What about training?

As they are working with young people, Skills Instructors must complete training in Safety, Safeguarding and GDPR. There are on-line courses for these. In many cases training in the skill is also needed. For example, Safety Boat Instructors must have an RYA Safety Boat Certificate. It is also desirable to have a first aid qualification although this is not necessary if there is another first aider present.

We can arrange all the necessary training for you.
