Thank you for thinking about
volunteering with a Section at the 1st Hoveton and
Wroxham
Here is the information about this role in
Scouting.
What are Sections?
Scout Groups are divided up into Sections. These
are:
Squirrels - Age 4 to 6 years
Beavers - Age 6 to 8 years
Cubs - Age 8 to about 10 and a half years
Scouts - Ages 10 to 14 years
Explorers Ages 14 to 18 years. (Note Explorers are not
actually part of the Group)
How are Section Volunteers organised?
Section Volunteers are organised into the following
groups:
Section Leaders (normally only one of
these) in overall charge of the Section
Assistant Section Leaders (as many as
are needed)
Section Assistants (Help with running
Section meetings but are not left in charge)
Explorer Scout Young Leaders (Learning
the Leadership skills. Aged 14 to 18)
Sections can also have occasional helpers and a Parent
Rota who maybe help once or twice per term.
What do Section Volunteers do?
Section Volunteers are responsible for:
Management of the Section
Planning the Programme of meetings and other activities
Delivering the Programme at meetings
Although Section Volunteers normally only work with one
section, they can help with other sections as required.
They are full members of the Scout Association and can
join in with all Scouting activities. They wear a uniform.
We pay for adult uniforms. As full members, they make the
Scout Promise.
Expect to join in lots of fun activities, go camping and
get out into the outdoors. Everything you ever thought
that Scouts do, you will do too.
This can seem like a lot of things to do, but at the 1st
Hoveton and Wroxham, help and support is always on hand.
You will not be thrown in at the deep end or asked to do
things you don't want to do.
What about training?
To be a Section Volunteer, you need to undertake training
for your role. Most training is done on-line although
there are other ways you can do it. You will be given a
Training Advisor who will help you. You don't need
to undertake training for things you can already do. Your
Training Advisor will deal with this.
Some training is compulsory. This is to keep us all safe:
Safety
Safeguarding
GDPR
First Aid
Other training depends on the exact role you have and what
skills you already have, but a comprehensive set of
training is available for all volunteers to make sure you
have the tools to do the job. At the moment, the whole
training scheme is being revised and we expect a new
training programme to be available later in 2024. More
details when we have it.
We can arrange all the necessary training for you.
Do I need a DBS check?
Yes you do. We will arrange this for you.
What is good about this type of
Volunteering?
Working with a Section is real hands on Scouting. You help
with the development of young people giving them new
skills and new self confidence in a fun and friendly
environment.
Not only this, you will gain new friends, new skills and
something very special for your CV.
